Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Its main highlight is that a webmaster can optimize his ad campaigns through Google Analytics' analysis of where the visitors came from, how long they stayed on the website, and their geographical position.

Google's service was modeled upon Urchin Software Corporation's analytics system, Urchin on Demand (Google acquired Urchin Software in March 2005). Google still supplies the standalone Urchin on Demand software.

Due to extreme demand for the service, Google closed Analytics to new sign-ups. Currently, only the 234,735 people who created accounts before November 22 and paying Adwords users are able to use the service.

Google is slowly adding capacity to the service, data collected now updates within 12 hours. Some users can officially add up to 5 site profiles (it appears this is being rolled out to all Analytics users). In addition, Google unoffically made it possible for existing users to add new website profiles to track due to a bug in the blanking out of the link for new profiles. When one views the source code for the main page, one will find a link to add new profiles.
